A house built
for the long pause

Nestled between ancient Sitka spruce and the Pacific's restless shoreline, The Beach House has welcomed quiet travelers since before the highway reached our door.

We believe the best journeys are the ones that strip away everything unnecessary — noise, hurry, the sense that you should be elsewhere.

Our home sits on a bluff above Pelican State Beach, one of the most untouched stretches of Pacific coastline in California. The fog rolls in each evening like a promise. The whales pass through in spring and fall. And the silence here is the kind you can actually hear.

Every morning begins with the same ritual — coffee on the porch, watching the light shift across the water as the tide turns.

There are no televisions in our common rooms. No clocks on the walls. The nearest town is a ten-minute drive, and we encourage our guests to leave their phones behind. What remains is what matters: the sound of waves, the smell of salt and pine, the extraordinary ordinary act of doing nothing at all.

Smith River sits at the northern edge of California, where the borders of Oregon and Washington feel within reach. The Beach House is located on Gilbert Way, a quiet road that descends from the redwoods directly to Pelican State Beach — a half-mile walk through coastal scrub and sand dunes.

The nearest significant town is Crescent City, California, approximately 20 minutes south. We are the last developed address before the Oregon border, and that remoteness is precisely what makes this place special.

We welcome guests year-round, though our quietest months — November through February — are also the most dramatic. Storms roll in from the Gulf of Alaska, and the forest smells of wet earth and pine resin.
